Dragon Boat Painting for the Oakland Renegades

Dragon boat racing season is in full swing this year, so I’m looking back to when I painted a on dragon boat for my old team the Oakland Renegades! They were my first team, my introduction to the sport, and will always have a special place in my heart. It was a lot of fun to paint on the boat and help the team look good on the water!

Dragon boats are long - this one is over 40 feet - and the team had me paint the full website name on the side in solid block letters. We added the detailed dragon logo next to it, and the name of the boat at the end. I painted the same thing on both sides - the website name alone was over 7 feet long.

Dragon boat is a great collaborative team sport, and everyone pitches in off the water to help with the boat upkeep as well. It was a fun day, some teammates and friends came by to visit and hang out, or put some finishing touches on the boat. I also just find being by the water very calming. The Renegades dock on the estuary between Oakland and Alameda, and there’s a lot of wildlife to see.

I’m paddling with a different team these days (still on the estuary), and I’m always happy to see my former team out on the water. If you’re ever walking along the shore, keep a lookout for a dragon boat - you might see us!
